Carnegie Hall Subscriptions - International Festival of Orchestras III
International Festival of Orchestras III

“You couldn’t imagine how this will sound!” proclaimed Mahler before the premiere of his Third Symphony. Boulez leads the Staatskapelle Berlin in a work that is truly “all-embracing” (as Mahler himself stated a symphony should be). The Vienna Philharmonic performs Schoenberg’s sensuous Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), based on a love poem by German poet Richard Dehmel, while the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky’s tempestuous Fourth Symphony. The Budapest Festival Orchestra takes us to the world of the Gypsies with traditional pieces and Gypsy works by Brahms, Liszt, and Sarasate, enlivened by a father-son Gypsy duo, the legendary Lendvays.

Iván fischer, Emanuel Ax, Pierre Boulez, Michelle DeYoung
