FOR THE 2008–2009 SEASON

MICHEL CAMILO TRIO, ANDRÉ PREVIN JAZZ TRIO, AND GEORGE WEIN & FRIENDS PERFORM IN NEW THREE-CONCERT JAZZ SERIES PRESENTED BY
CARNEGIE HALL IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GEORGE WEIN

Carnegie Hall today announced a new three-concert jazz series in Zankel Hall for its 2008–2009 season. Entitled Just Jazz: The Joyce Wein Series, the series is presented by Carnegie Hall in partnership with legendary jazz impresario George Wein and includes performances by the Michel Camilo Trio (November 13), André Previn Jazz Trio (February 19), as well as a special concert featuring George Wein and an all-star ensemble of friends in a program dedicated to Mr. Wein’s late wife Joyce Wein, entitled To Joyce with Love (April 2). The series is sponsored by the Joyce and George Wein Foundation in memory of Joyce Wein.

•   Michel Camilo Solo/Trio, Thursday, November 13 at 8:30 p.m.—Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer Michel Camilo performs solo and with his trio—bassist Charles Flores and drummer Dafnis Prieto—in an evening of originals and standards melding jazz and Afro Cuban rhythms on a program titled Caribe. The trio’s album, Spirit of the Moment, was released on Telarc in 2007.

•   André Previn Jazz Trio, Thursday, February 19 at 8:30 p.m..—Legendary conductor-pianist-composer André Previn celebrates his 80th birthday this season with four Carnegie Hall concerts, beginning with a performance by his jazz trio. Previn started playing jazz as a teenager and over the years has released a numerous renowned jazz albums.

•   George Wein and Friends, Thursday, April 2 at 8:30 p.m.—Entitled To Joyce with Love this concert is dedicated to George Wein’s late wife and features Wein on piano joined by an all-star cast of friends, including Howard Alden, Evan Christopher, Anat Cohen, Jimmy Cobb, Dick Hyman, Ken Peplowski, Bucky Pizzarelli, Randy Sandke, Lew Tabackin, and Warren Vaché. “The jazz of Ellington, Basie, Lunceford, Goodman, Holiday, and so many others of their era was what brought my wife Joyce and me together,” said Mr. Wein. “This concert, dedicated to Joyce, will reflect the music of that golden age of jazz and is performed by musicians who knew and loved Joyce.”

Jazz impresario George Wein is renowned for his work in creating and producing music festivals, and in particular the Newport Jazz Festival, an event that in the words of the late jazz critic Leonard Feather started the “festival era.” A professional pianist from his early teens, Wein went on to lead his own band and frequently accompanying musicians. In 1950, he opened his own club in Boston, formed the Storyville record label, and launched his career as a jazz entrepreneur. In 1969, George Wein established Festival Productions, which produces hundreds of musical events, including The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, The Newport Folk Festival, the Kool Jazz Festival, the Essence Music Festival, and the JVC Jazz festivals. Mr. Wein is an Honorary Trustee on the board of Carnegie Hall and serves on the board of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He has also been honored with the French Legion d’ Honneur and designated a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition to his work as a producer, he is an author, and continues to perform as a pianist with his group, the Newport All-Stars.

Carnegie Hall presents more than 200 performances each season by the world's greatest soloists, ensembles, and orchestras on its three great stages—the renowned Isaac Stern Auditorium/Ronald O. Perelman Stage, intimate Weill Recital Hall, and innovative Zankel Hall. The establishment of The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall in 2003 and The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—in 2007 has paved the way for expanded opportunities as Carnegie Hall moves forward as an international cultural center representing the very best in musical performance, artist development, and arts education.
