Program Details and Fees

PERELMAN AMERICAN ROOTS (GRADES 6–8)
African American Song

The 2008–09 Perelman American Roots program will focus on the history of the African American Song. The curriculum will contain 15 lessons in sequential order, including five Teaching Artist lessons and three lessons supporting the creation of a final project. New to the program this year will be the inclusion of skills-based materials and entry points for music performance classrooms. These materials will include transcriptions of game songs, work songs, and arranged spirituals.

All participants will attend the two program concerts. At the mid-year concert, students can explore and share work completed up until that point; the concert will feature musical selections from the curriculum. Students participating in the Carnegie Hall National High School Choral Festival will be present at this event and will share some of their work on spirituals.

The final concert for this program will feature performances by the renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers and will connect to the range of material and repertoire studied in the curriculum. At this event, participating classes will share their final projects and collaborate with our featured artists.
