BAVARIAN RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Music Director Sir Simon Rattle makes his first appearances as chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Sir Simon and the orchestra present two programs, including the final concert presented as part of the citywide festival Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice, with program to include Hindemith’s Ragtime (Well-Tempered), Zemlinsky’s Symphonische Gesänge, Op. 20, featuring baritone Lester Lynch, and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 in A Minor. This concert will be heard live by listeners around the world as part of the Carnegie Hall Live broadcast and digital series. Produced by WQXR and Carnegie Hall, and co-hosted by WQXR’s Jeff Spurgeon and WNYC’s John Schaefer, the concert will be broadcast on WQXR 105.9 FM in New York and streamed online atwqxr.organdcarnegiehall.org/wqxr

The following evening, Sir Simon and the orchestra return to perform Wagner’s Prelude und Liebestod fromTristan und Isolde, the US premiere ofAquifer, a new work by Thomas Adès (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall), and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral.”

JUNCTION TRIO

The eclecticJunction Trio—featuring violinist Stefan Jackiw, cellist Jay Campbell, and pianist Conrad Tao—makes its first appearance at Carnegie Hall with John Zorn’s Philosophical Investigations as well as Ives’s Piano Trio and Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 97, “Archduke.”

World-renowned pianist Yefim Bronfman returns to Carnegie Hall to perform piano works by Schubert, Robert Schumann, Chopin, and Prokofiev, as well as a piece dedicated to Bronfman by renowned conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen.

ENSEMBLE CONNECT UP CLOSE

Tradition meets innovation as the musicians of Ensemble Connect collaborate on a boundary-transcending program with electronics designer and percussionist Levy Lorenzo. The unique performance includes Lorenzo’s new work, Consolas, for a quartet of interactive electronic instruments; Lorenzo’s inventive take on Terry Riley’s In C with custom musical bots; and a pair of iconic works for live instruments and electronics by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Kaija Saariaho.

Audience members are invited to arrive at 7 PM to experience an interactive sound-reactive light installation by Lorenzo and lighting designer Nick Houfek. Each ticket includes a voucher for a free drink.

Orchestra of St. Luke’s concludes its 2023–2024 series with an evening of Brahms choral works led by Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie and joined by soprano Erin Morley, baritone Andrè SchuenLa Chapelle de Québec, and Ensemble Altera. The program begins with the first-ever Carnegie Hall performance of the composer’s Begräbnisgesang, followed by Ein deutsches Requiem.

Pianist Yuja Wang is one of the foremost musicians of our time, and she continues to reach new heights. Decoda—Carnegie Hall’s first-ever affiliate ensemble, comprised of alumni of the acclaimed Ensemble Connect—returns with a program that takes the 80th anniversary of Copland’s Appalachian Spring as its inspiration and departure point, featuring a world premiere composed by and featuring Ringdown, the new electronic cinematic pop duo of Caroline Shaw and Danni Lee (commissioned by Carnegie Hall); Eisler’s Septet No. 1, Op. 92a (Variations on American Children's Songs); a new arrangement of Billy Bragg’s setting of Woody Guthrie’s “Eisler on the Go”; and Vera by Hannah Kendall.

The Knights’ final performance of their 2023–2024 series includes the world premiere of Jessie Montgomery’s Rhapsody No. 2 (in a new orchestration for violin and chamber orchestra by Michi Wiancko, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall), selected works by singer-songwriter and composer Gabriel Kahane, including the New York premiere of a piano concerto, Heirloom, written for his father, Jeffrey Kahane on piano, as well as the New York premiere of Anna Clyne’s Shorthand for Cello and Orchestra featuring The Knight’s own Karen Ouzounian.

In 2022, pianist Seong-Jin Cho’s stature at the Hall reached legendary status thanks to his once-in-a-lifetime performance of Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto—played by memory, on a single day’s notice, for the first time in years—as he filled an urgently needed role with the Vienna Philharmonic. For this performance, Cho returns to Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage in recital, performing music by Haydn, Ravel, and Liszt.

DAVID VIRELLES NOSOTROS ENSEMBLE FEATURING DAFNIS PRIETO

Pianist David Virelles and percussionist Dafnis Prieto come together with an all-star ensemble that celebrates the wide-ranging influence of Cuban rhythms, curated in collaboration with Debs Composer’s Chair Tania León. The program includes the world premiere of Oro—a new multimedia piece by Virelles, commissioned by Carnegie Hall for this occasion, and performed by his Nosotros Ensemble—as well as a piece by Virelles’s mentor, NEA Jazz Master Henry Threadgill; music by and featuring composer and turntablist Val-Inc; and León’s duo for piano and percussion, A la par, performed by Orion Weiss and Ian Rosenbaum.

TWELFTH NIGHT

Violinist Rachell Ellen Wong and harpsichordist David Belkovski lead the debut of their early-music ensemble Twelfth Night in a program entitled Elemental that reimagines operatic and instrumental masterpieces from the Baroque era that explore humanity’s relationship to nature. Featuring soprano Julie Roset and mezzo-soprano Xenia Puskarz Thomas, they will perform works by Handel, Marais, Vivaldi, J. S. Bach, Rossi, and Destouches.

Pianist Evgeny Kissin returns, presenting two performances featuring the same program: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 27 in E Minor, Op. 90; Brahms’s Four Ballades, Op. 10; Chopin’s Nocturne in F-sharp Minor, Op. 48, No. 2 and Fantasy in F Minor, Op. 49; and closing with Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 14.

THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA

For The Philadelphia Orchestra’s final concert of the season, Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads the ensemble in masterworks by Ravel and Debussy, and continues its celebrated partnership with composer Valerie Coleman, presenting the New York premiere of her Concerto for Orchestra. The orchestra is joined by pianist and Carnegie Hall Perspectives artist Mitsuko Uchida for Ravel’s jazz-inflected Piano Concerto in G Major. The program is completed by Debussy’s La mer.
