Grammy Award-Winning Jazz Vocalist Samara Joy Makes Carnegie Hall Debut on April 30

On International Jazz Day, Wednesday, April 30 at 8:00 p.m., Carnegie Hall presents three-time Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Samara Joy in her debut performance in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. One of the hottest voices in jazz today, the Bronx native won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition at age 19 and has since dazzled audiences at esteemed venues and festivals across the world. In this concert, Joy is joined by her band to perform songs from her highly anticipated follow-up album.

PROGRAM AND ARTIST UPDATE:
The Sphinx Virtuosi, a chamber orchestra comprised of alumni of the renowned Sphinx Competition, return with newly announced violinist Tai Murray and percussionist Britton-René Collins, alongside previously announced violinist Njioma Chinyere Grevious. The evening includes New York premieres of Curtis Stewart’s Drill and Derrick Skye’s American Mirror, Part One, and a new arrangement of Joplin’s overture from Treemonisha (arr. Jannina Norpoth and Jessie Montgomery), all co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall. Also newly added to the program is Teresa Carreño’s Tempo di Marcia from Serenade for Strings, Curtis Stewart’s Double Down, Invention #1 for Two Violins, and Levi Taylor’s Daydreaming (A Fantasy on Scott Joplin). Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag” and “The Entertainer” are no longer on the program.

Carnegie Hall’s Well-Being Concerts return for a second season, combining world-class musical performances with elements of self-care and mindfulness, animated by evidence that music helps people heal and thrive. Each concert creates an immersive, nurturing space in which audiences and performers share in the soul-nourishing benefits of music, create shared experiences, and explore tools for well-being that last long after the performance. Artists performing as part of the Well-Being concert series include cellist Joshua Roman; Cuban jazz pianist Omar Sosa and Senegalese kora master Seckou Keita in Zankel Hall Center Stage as part of the citywide festival Nuestros sonidos: Celebrating Latin Culture in the USPalaver Strings ensemble; and two well-being concerts hosted bilingually in Spanish and English also part of Nuestros sonidos with guitarist, vocalist, and composer Camila Meza; and vocalist and composer Magos Herrera.

Audience can witness music history-in-the-making as the “Queen of Reggaeton” Ivy Queen performs in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. First emerging on the music scene in the 1990s with a powerful ethos of empowerment and self-determination, this pioneering Puerto Rican singer, rapper, songwriter, and actress remains a true artistic force and cultural trailblazer. Her music—which spans not only reggaeton, but also salsa, bachata, hip-hop, and more—has been an essential soundtrack not only in nightclubs, but also in the headphones of many of today’s most popular artists. This concert is presented as part of the citywide festival Nuestros sonidos: Celebrating Latin Culture in the US.

The date and time of Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian’s recital has been changed (previously scheduled for December 17). Now on Thursday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m., she makes her first of two Carnegie Hall appearances this season, appearing in recital with pianist Lukas Geniušas, performing songs and selections by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff drawn from her critically acclaimed 2022 debut album.

Please note that the ensemble’s programs have swapped dates—the program previously announced for Sunday, May 11 will now be performed on Monday, January 13 and includes Yannick Nézet-Séguin as pianist for Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet on a program that now also includes Josquin’s Selected Motets (arr. for bassoon quartet), Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello, Caroline Lizotte’s Raga for Two Harps, Op. 41, and the previously announced Price Suite for Brasses. The program for Monday, March 24 now includes selections from Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio, replacing Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello. On April 28, the ensemble will perform "L’invitation au voyage" with Michelle DeYoung in addition to the previously announced Mahler Das Lied von der Erde (arr. Schoenberg), with DeYoung and tenor Ben Bliss, and Thomas Adès’ Alchymia. The ensemble’s Italian Serenade program previously scheduled for January 13 has been rescheduled for May 11 with repertoire remaining the same, including works by Puccini, Briccaldi, Rota, Wolf, and Verdi.

The multi-Grammy Award–winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) is a big band of jazz and Latin-jazz virtuosos led by the inimitable Arturo O’Farrill. The concert, part of Nuestros sonidos, offers its impeccable ensemble playing, showstopping soloists, and expansive repertoire—including works by Arturo and Chico O’Farrill, and featuring special guests: Afro-Cuban jazz singer Daymé Arocena, Haitian singer Emeline Michel, and Cuban rapper, musician, and spoken word artist Telmary.

Colombia’s legendary Grupo Niche makes its Carnegie Hall debut during the Nuestros sonidos festival. Based in Cali, Colombia, often called the “Salsa Capital of the World,” this band has been creating genuine classics since the late 1970s. Songs like “Cali Pachanguero,” “Una Aventura,” and “Gotas de Lluvia” are enduring staples on today’s concert stages. The group’s most recent successes—including Latin Grammys for Best Salsa Album (2020 and 2023) and Best Latin Tropical Album (2021)—show their remarkable evolution and vitality.

Pianist Emanuel Ax offers a recital program now featuring Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas Nos. 13 and 14, John Corigliano’s Fantasia on an Ostinato, and Robert Schumann’s Arabeske in C Major and Fantasy in C Major, Op. 17. The previously announced Schubert’s Four Impromptus, D. 935 and Barber’s Excursions are no longer on the program.

ARTIST UPDATE:
The Handel matinee concert by Harry Bicket and The English Concert is one of Carnegie Hall’s most popular annual traditions—combining exquisite ensemble work, charismatic singers, and an irresistible penchant for theatricality. This performance features a concert performance of Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, with mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor replacing the previously announced Avery Amereau as Cornelia. Also in the cast is Christophe Dumaux in the title role, Louise Alder as Cleopatra, Paula Murrihy as Sesto, and John Holiday as Tolomeo.

Acclaimed pianist Evgeny Kissin is joined by vocal soloists soprano Susanna Phillips, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, tenor Brandon Jovanovich, and bass Alexander Roslavets, as well as previously announced violinist Gidon Kremer, cellist Giedrė Dirvanauskaitė, and the Kopelman Quartet, for a highly personal tribute to Shostakovich, featuring his Four Verses of Captain Lebyadkin; Piano Quintet, Piano Trio No. 2; and From Jewish Folk Poetry.
