Five years since their last sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall, countertenor Iestyn Davies and early music viol consort Fretwork return, joined by organist Silas Wollston, to perform works drawn from 17th-century Germany—including music by J.C. Bach, Tunder, Scheidt, Buxtehude, and more—in a program titled “Lamento” after their award-winning album of the same name.

Chief Conductor and Music Director Semyon Bychkov and the Czech Philharmonic return to Carnegie Hall for the first time since 2018, presenting three concerts tied to the worldwide Year of Czech Music, a decennial celebration in 2024 that highlights legendary Czech composers. Across the three programs, Yo-Yo MaGil Shaham, and Daniil Trifonov join Maestro Bychkov and the orchestra to perform beloved and lesser-known concertos by Dvořák. These concerts also feature selections from Smetana’s Má Vlast, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, and Janáček’s magnificent Glagolitic Mass featuring the Prague Philharmonic Choir.

The Czech Philharmonic’s concert on December 4 will be heard live by listeners around the world as part of the Carnegie Hall Live broadcast and digital series. Produced by WQXR and Carnegie Hall, and co-hosted by WQXR’s Jeff Spurgeon and WNYC’s John Schaefer, the concert will be broadcast on WQXR 105.9 FM in New York and streamed online at wqxr.org and carnegiehall.org/wqxr.

TRIO MEDIÆVAL
CATALINA VIECENS

The singers of Trio Mediæval return to Carnegie Hall with Catalina Vicens for “An Old Hall Ladymass,” a program featuring music drawn from a 15th-century choir book almost lost to history until it was rediscovered at the end of the 19th century. These medieval sacred works will be performed alongside new music by David Lang and Marianne Reidarsdatter Eriksen.

PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC CHOIR

For their first performance after their Carnegie Hall debut in 2018, the Prague Philharmonic Choir returns as part of the celebration of the Year of Czech Music with a program of Czech choral works by Eben, Janáček, Dvořák, Martinů, and Jan Novák. This concert follows the choir’s performance in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage the previous evening with Semyon Bychkov and the Czech Philharmonic.

Pianist Kirill Gerstein makes his Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage recital debut with a program to include Robert Schumann’s Carnaval; Ravel’s La valse; two Liszt works: the rarely performed “Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude” from Harmonies poétiques et religieuses and Piano Sonata in B Minor; as well as the New York premiere of Francisco Coll’s Two Waltzes Toward Civilization, inspired by Federico García Lorca’s seminal book of poetry, Poet in New York.

A Well-Being Concert

Following his unforgettable (and sold-out) Well-Being Concert in December 2023, cellist Joshua Roman returns with another immersive event to encourage self-care, mindfulness, and healing in Carnegie Hall’s Resnick Education Wing. Celebrated for his “playful zest for exploration” (The New York Times) and “contagious enthusiasm for musical evolution” (The Seattle Times), Roman is a TED Senior Fellow (and hit performer at the TED Conference) who became the Seattle Symphony’s youngest principal player at age 22. A prolific and eclectic solo career has now taken him around the world and included collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, DJ Spooky, Somi, Anna Deavere Smith, and numerous top orchestras.

One of opera and art song’s brightest rising stars, Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian makes her first of two Carnegie Hall appearances this season, appearing in recital with pianist Lukas Geniušas. The pair will perform selections by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff drawn from their critically acclaimed 2022 debut album, Dissonance. Ms. Grigorian returns as soloist with Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra in March.

A joyous holiday tradition continues as the New York String Orchestra returns for its annual December concerts conducted by Jaime Laredo. On Christmas Eve, the orchestra presents an all-Mozart program featuring The Philadelphia Orchestra’s longtime principal clarinetist Ricardo Morales. The group’s second concert includes Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Prologue and Variations, Barber’s Violin Concerto with Jennifer Koh, and Brahms’s Symphony No. 1.
