CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS

Soloists of the Kronberg Academy
Antoine Tamestit, Viola
Gary Hoffman, Cello

Sunday, February 23, 2020 3 PM Zankel Hall
Make new discoveries in this concert that features a rare duo by Mozart, a glimpse at what a Brahms fifth symphony might have been, and a daredevil serenade by Dohnányi. Mozart’s duo offers both instruments opportunities to shine in its outer movements and sing a flowing aria in the gorgeous central section. The powerful opening of Brahms's String Quintet No. 2 was derived from sketches for a fifth symphony, but it’s just one episode in an energetic work that ends in a rousing Hungarian dance.

Soloists of the Kronberg Academy is also performing February 21 and February 22 (3 PM and 7:30 PM).

Antoine Tamestit is also performing February 22.

Gary Hoffman is also performing February 22.

At a Glance

MOZART  Duo for Violin and Viola in G Major, K. 423

An accomplished string player as well as a virtuoso pianist, Mozart demonstrated his affinity for the viola’s distinctive timbre in a number of works, including his six string quintets (which call for pairs of violins and violas), his sublime Sinfonia concertante for violin and viola, and his two lighthearted duos for violin and viola.

DOHNÁNYI  Serenade for String Trio in C Major, Op. 10

Composed early in Dohnányi’s career, when the 25-year-old Hungarian was better known as a pianist than a composer, the Serenade in C Major pays homage to Brahms—a formative influence on Dohnányi’s music—while looking ahead to the ripe lyricism and incisive, unsentimental vitality of the composer’s mature works.

BRAHMS  String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 111

Brahms was 57 years old and looking toward retirement when he wrote the second of his two string quintets. Yet this sunny, high-spirited masterpiece shows no trace of flagging energy or invention. Indeed, a close friend likened the G-Major Quintet to the exuberant String Sextet in the same key that Brahms had written a quarter of a century earlier.
