In 2006, Amsterdam’s Dutch National Opera presented Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth. It was for this production that Mariss Jansons—one of the best-known conductors of Shostakovich’s scores—made his first appearance as a guest conductor at the Dutch National Opera. Directed for the stage by Martin Kušej, the cast includes soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek (in her Dutch National Opera debut) as Katerina Ismailova, tenor Christopher Ventris as Sergey, tenor Ludovit Ludha as Zinovy Ismailov, and bass Anatoly Kotcherga as Boris Ismailov.
