At a Glance

A keyboard virtuoso with few rivals, Beethoven had the Viennese public eating out of his hand in 1797 when he wrote his Op. 11 trio, which borrows from a popular operatic aria of the day. By the time he wrote the D-Major Trio in 1808, with its extraordinary dynamism and compression, Beethoven was well on his way to perfecting his so-called “heroic” style. The “Ghost” Trio is contemporary with the “Pastoral” Symphony, which appears on tonight’s program in an arrangement for trio by Shai Wosner, who highlights Beethoven’s symphonic dialogue and ingenious transformation of themes through the conversational mode of chamber music.
