Jaap van Zweden by Dario Acosta, Hilary Hahn by Dana van Leeuwen / Decca
Applaud the New York Philharmonic in the concluding concert of its season at Carnegie Hall. The performance opens with a world premiere by Sarah Kirkland Snider, a “rising star on the American compositional scene” (The Wall Street Journal). Hilary Hahn joins the orchestra for Barber’s Violin Concerto, a work that enchants with its lyricism—its second-movement dialogue for oboe and violin is ravishing—and breathlessly virtuosic finale. Mahler’s music is one of this orchestra’s hallmarks; his First Symphony depicts evocative sounds of nature, with added dashes of klezmer and tender folk song before its thunderous ecstatic climax.
