MOZART Nine Variations on a Minuet by J. P. Duport, K. 573
Mozart was at the peak of his fame as a keyboard virtuoso when he wrote this bravura set of variations on a stately dance by Jean-Pierre Duport, a celebrated cellist who served as director of chamber music at the Prussian court.
MOZART Piano Sonata in D Major, K. 311
A rarity on concert programs, the D-Major Sonata shows Mozart’s skill in supplying music for the amateur Hausmusik market: It was written for one of the young women pianists he met on his travels in Germany and France.
LISZT Ballade No. 2 in B Minor
Composed around the same time as Liszt’s massive Sonata in B Minor, this dramatic and brilliantly virtuosic work illustrates the technique of thematic transformation with which the Hungarian composer is closely identified.
BRAHMS Theme and Variations in D Minor, Op. 18b
Brahms transcribed the slow movement of his String Sextet in B-flat Major at the behest of Clara Schumann. Unlike most of his early works, the sextet was immediately popular; one critic raved about its “peaceful, pleasurable, dreamy garden mood.”
CLARA SCHUMANN Three Romances, Op. 21
Like her husband Robert, Clara Schumann was drawn to the intimate genre of the instrumental romance, with its emphasis on lyricism and sentimentality. Her Op. 21 is dedicated to Brahms, whom the Schumanns had recently met for the first time.
ROBERT SCHUMANN Piano Sonata No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 22
Despite its higher opus number, Robert Schumann’s G-Minor Sonata was written before the final version of the Sonata No. 3 in F Minor, Op. 14. Upon previewing the score, Clara wrote: “I love it as I love you, and it expresses your entire being so clearly.”
