Density 2036: part i & ii

Thursday, May 18, 2023 7:30 PM Zankel Hall
Claire Chase by Walter Wlodarczyk
The tirelessly creative flutist and curator Claire Chase has been called “the North Star of her instrument’s ever-expanding universe” (The New York Times). At the center of her Debs Creative Chair residency is the continuation of Density 2036. By annually commissioning a new body of flute repertory, this 24-year project consistently expands the boundaries of the instrument. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of this monumental project, Chase performs the first 10 programs in one exhilarating week, beginning with this Zankel Hall concert and culminating with the world premiere of Density x, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall.

Please join Claire Chase and Density 2036 composers for a post-concert conversation from the stage, moderated by Ara Guzelimian.

About Density 2036

Density 2036 is a 24-year project begun by Claire Chase in 2013 to commission a new body of repertory for solo flute each year until the 100th anniversary of Edgard Varèse’s groundbreaking 1936 flute solo Density 21.5. Chase will commission and premiere a new program of flute music every year until 2036, each piece in the project expanding the boundaries of the instrument. For the 10-year anniversary of Density 2036, Chase performs all Density commissions up to the present in a series of concerts in Zankel Hall and as part of Carnegie Hall Citywide at The Kitchen at Westbeth. The final two programs will be the world premieres of Density 2036: part ix, an evening-length piece by Craig Taborn at The Kitchen, and Density 2036: part x, an evening-length piece by Anna Thorvaldsdottir at Carnegie Hall.
