Kirill Gerstein, Piano

Thursday, January 18, 2024 7:30 PM Zankel Hall
Kirill Gerstein by Marco Borggreve
Kirill Gerstein is a pianist with “blazing technique [and] wonderful command of color and nuance” (The Wall Street Journal), praised for “the kind of serious, intelligent, and virtuosic music-making that keeps classical music alive” (The Observer). In this recital, he performs Chopin’s Polonaise-fantaisie, a stylistically diverse late work whose genre even Chopin labored to determine, as well as Liszt’s Second Polonaise, composed just several years later. Gerstein also performs additional works by Chopin—the Fantasy in F Minor, Op. 49; and Waltz in A-flat Major, Op. 42—plus Robert Schumann’s spirited, five-movement piano suite Faschingsschwank aus Wien; one of Kreisler’s Old Viennese Dances, transcribed (and recorded) by Rachmaninoff; and additional selections by Fauré and Poulenc.
