Ema Nikolovska’s program is an imaginative collection of some rarely heard works by famous composers and works to discover from such relatively unknown composers as the Russian émigrés Nicolas Medtner and Nicolas Slonimsky. We begin with four Schubert lieder that don’t appear on many programs, though they are works of substantial worth. Songs by Richard Strauss include his only setting of a poem by the renowned Goethe. We also encounter African American composer Margaret Bonds’s stunning songs to poetry by Langston Hughes. Best-known on the program are Debussy’s wonderful Ariettes oubliées to verses by Verlaine. The surprises are two superb songs by Medtner, who was deeply admired by Rachmaninoff. And finally some words from our sponsors, in Slonimsky’s amusing settings.
