Year of Czech Music

Carnegie Hall joins music lovers around the world for the 2024 Year of Czech Music, a decennial celebration that highlights legendary Czech composers.

On this evening’s program, the Prague Philharmonic Choir presents beautiful vocal works by Czech composers, with renowned tenor Kyle van Schoonhoven performing alongside the choir. The repertoire includes works by Bohuslav Martinů, one of the few European composers who conquered the United States—many of his works were premiered by celebrated American orchestras under the direction of world-renowned conductors. The concert also commemorates the fight for freedom and democracy by featuring compositions by Petr Eben and Jan Novák—composers whose lives and works were deeply affected by Nazi and Communist oppression. The works of Leoš Janáček and Antonín Dvořák—who also spent time in New York and whose “New World” Symphony was premiered in December 1893 at Carnegie Hall—reflect a deep love for God and humility toward nature. This evening’s program offers a perfect opportunity to become acquainted with European composers whose works are acclaimed and performed worldwide.
