Piotr Beczała has chosen a rich assortment of songs from the Romantic era, spanning composers from Eastern Europe, Germany, and Norway. Works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff showcase the Russian romance genre: passionate, heart-on-sleeve songs that revolve around the joys and torments of love. Songs by Schumann and Grieg were inspired by their love for their musician wives: the virtuoso pianist Clara Schumann and the lyric soprano Nina Hagerup Grieg (whom Grieg called “the only true interpreter of my songs”). Beczała also introduces us to Mieczysław Karłowicz, a composer from the singer’s Polish homeland who died tragically young in the high Tatra Mountains, the region that fueled his creativity. A member of the Young Poland movement at the turn of the 20th century, he created a beautiful, very original collection of songs while still a 20-year-old conservatory student. In sum, it proves to be a romantic evening in both senses of the word!
