At a Glance
BERIO “Wasserklavier” from Six Encores for Piano
A leading figure in the post–World War II European avant-garde, Luciano Berio wrote music of formidable complexity that often sounds surprisingly accessible. A case in point is this short tonal essay whose delicate, aqueous textures are reminiscent of Debussy.
SCHUBERT Fantasie in F Minor, D. 940
If Schubert’s impromptus, moments musicaux, ländler, and other short piano pieces distill the essence of his lyrical genius in its purest and most concentrated form, his mature piano sonatas, fantasies, and other works combine the intimacy of the salon with an almost symphonic breadth. The Fantasie in F Minor comprises four interconnected sections of sharply different characters.
CAGE Experiences No. 1
This early piano duet by the intrepid American experimentalist John Cage exemplifies his lifelong devotion to music that “has no beginning, middle, or ending, nor any center of interest.” Experiences No. 1 was written at Black Mountain College, the innovative arts school in North Carolina.
NANCARROW Study No. 6
Like Cage, Conlon Nancarrow was one of America’s archetypal musical “mavericks.” This arrangement of his Study No. 6 by British composer Thomas Adès highlights the music’s quirky lyricism while preserving the almost jazzy vitality of the original player piano version.
JOHN ADAMS Hallelujah Junction
A longtime fixture of the West Coast new-music scene, Pulitzer Prize laureate John Adams holds the John and Samantha Williams Creative Chair at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In this rollicking duet, he writes, “The ghost of Conlon Nancarrow goes head to head with a Nevada cathouse pianola.”
ARVO PÄRT Hymn to a Great City
Despite his youthful interest in serial procedures, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt renounced the complexity embraced by the post–World War II avant-garde to become an apostle of minimalism. Hymn to a Great City (spoiler alert: the Big Apple) typifies his spare, often hypnotically repetitive musical language.
RACHMANINOFF Symphonic Dances, Op. 45
Rachmaninoff’s final work, this suite of three dances was intended to be the score for a ballet that never materialized. Fortunately, the music more than stands on its own in the composer’s alternative versions for orchestra and piano duet.
