Sir Antonio Pappano by Musacchio & Ianniello / EMI Classics, Yunchan Lim by Lisa-Marie Mazzucco
The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) returns to Carnegie Hall for the first time in 20 years, under the brand-new leadership of Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano. Joining them is rising piano superstar Yunchan Lim, whose sold-out Carnegie Hall debut recital in February 2024 has attracted audiences from around the world. Lim is featured in a major piano showpiece—Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2—and the LSO further treats audiences to a rare performance of British composer William Walton’s invigorating and emotionally intense Symphony No. 1.

At a Glance

Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is one of the most beloved works in the repertory, endlessly quoted in popular culture and championed by numerous virtuoso pianists despite its treacherous technical demands. Its seemingly effortless spontaneity and outpouring of lyricism are at odds with its torturous composition history, as Rachmaninoff was suffering from severe depression and was able to complete the concerto only with the help of his therapist, to whom he dedicated the piece. Walton’s First Symphony, one of the most thrilling symphonic works from the 1930s, was also written during a time of emotional meltdown and unleashes tempestuous emotion. It moves through the dark turbulence of the first two movements and the bittersweet Romanticism of the third toward a blazing triumph in the finale.
