Steven Bernstein by Jacob Blickenstaff
Witness the Carnegie Hall headlining debut of one of New York’s most prolific, creative, and unabashedly fun jazz artists since the 1980s. Trumpeter, arranger, composer, bandleader, and first-call bandmate Steven Bernstein is making the most of the occasion, leading his nine-piece “little big band” Millennial Territory Orchestra with three extremely special guests: Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Catherine Russell, guitar legend Vernon Reid (of Living Colour and much more), and the inimitable pianist and organist John Medeski. The Millennial Territory Orchestra, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, is a prime showcase of Bernstein’s irreverent, genre-crossing musical approach, offering a radical reimagining of repertoire that spans 1920s and ’30s swing gems to songs by The Beatles, Charles Mingus, Sly Stone, and Prince, each transformed by masterful arranging and sky’s-the-limit improvisation.
