Nevermind by Rita Cuggia
Join us for the Carnegie Hall debut of the vibrant Nevermind quartet. Self-described as “an ensemble whose virtuosity is equaled only by its youthful impetuosity and love of fine music,” the members’ shared passion is truly contagious—particularly when it comes to French Baroque music. The group comprises flutist Anna Besson, violinist Louis Creac’h, viola da gamba player Robin Pharo, and harpsichordist Jean Rondeau, whose last performance at the Hall was a widely hailed, sold-out recital. This enticing program celebrates Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, one of the few well-known women French Baroque composers, as well as Couperin and others.

At a Glance

Nevermind—featuring flutist Anna Besson, violinist Louis Creac’h, gambist Robin Pharo, and harpsichordist Jean Rondeau—presents a rich diversity of works from France at the turn of the 18th century, from trio sonatas to solo works designed to showcase the idiomatic virtuosity of all four instruments. This evening’s program highlights many compositions by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, a prominent composer, harpsichordist, and teacher of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In her trio sonatas as well as her violin sonatas, she blends the French and Italian styles, creating a colorful sonic palette. François Couperin also cultivates his love for musical cosmopolitanism in his trio sonata “La Françoise” from Les nations. Solo works for the flute by Jacques-Martin Hotteterre and Michel Pignolet de Montéclair, an unmeasured prelude for harpsichord by Jacquet de la Guerre, and a prelude for viola da gamba by Couperin provide each instrumentalist with the chance to demonstrate their virtuosity.
