Meredith Monk (Juilliard Distinguished Visiting Artist) is a composer, singer, and creator of new opera and music-theater works. Recognized as one of the most unique and influential artists of our time, she is a pioneer in what is now called “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance.” Celebrated internationally, her work has been presented at major venues around the world. Throughout the last six decades, Monk has been hailed as one of National Public Radio’s 50 Great Voices and one of America’s “coolest composers.” She is a MacArthur Fellow, a Grammy Award nominee, an officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of the Republic of France, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and winner of the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize and the National Medal of Arts. She was awarded an honorary degree from Juilliard in 1998.

In addition to numerous vocal works, Monk has created vital new repertoire for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments, with recent commissions from the San Francisco Symphony and Carnegie Hall, where she held the 2014–2015 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair. Monk has recorded with the ECM New Series label since 1981, and selected scores of her work are available through Boosey & Hawkes. Monk is celebrating her 60th performance season with a host of events centered in New York City through May.
