Yefim Bronfman by Dario Acosta
Yefim Bronfman’s career at Carnegie Hall has been a story of constant amazement for nearly 50 years, and his solo recitals continue to stand out among his greatest highlights. Tonight’s performance begins with a spritely Mozart piano sonata, three of Debussy’s harmonically rich and exquisitely spacious Images, and Robert Schumann’s Arabeske in C Major, which soars “as if on gossamer wings” (Los Angeles Times) when performed by Bronfman. The program also includes Tchaikovsky’s rarely heard Piano Sonata in G Major. “In Bronfman’s superhuman hands, its symphonic scale and orchestral textures [are] highlighted with virtuosic flair,” said The New York Times of his stunning rendition on our stage in 2010.

At a Glance

MOZART  Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 332

A first-rate pianist, Mozart devoted much of the last decade of his life to composing music for the instrument, including the majority of his 27 concertos and half of his 18 solo sonatas. The F-Major Sonata—which centers one of Mozart’s most luminously lyrical slow movements—exhibits a carefully calibrated balance between simplicity and virtuosity.

R. SCHUMANN  Arabeske in C Major, Op. 18

This charmingly lightweight piece represents Robert Schumann at his most ingratiating. Unlike the Op. 20 Humoreske, composed around the same time, the Arabeske is pure and simple salon music.

DEBUSSY  Images, Book II

Although Debussy objected to being called an “impressionist,” the aesthetic principles behind much of his music—including his second book of Images—reflect a deep affinity with both the visual arts and early cinema.

TCHAIKOVSKY  Piano Sonata in G Major, Op. 37

Although Tchaikovsky wrote dozens of short character pieces for the piano, he composed only two full-length sonatas, the first of which remained unpublished until after his death. The G-Major Sonata of 1878 had a long and arduous gestation. Described by the composer as a “somewhat dry and complicated piece,” the sonata has had many champions since it was first performed by Russian virtuoso Nikolai Rubinstein.
