In partnership with Tuskegee University and the Weill Music Institute, Gateways Music Festival is also hosting a free symposium that celebrates the legacy of composer William Levi Dawson. On Saturday, April 26 at 10 AM in Carnegie Hall’s Resnick Education Wing, performers, scholars, and audiences gather to explore Dawson’s impact on classical music, and the significance of his integration of Negro spirituals into concert-hall repertoire and the symphonic tradition.

Since the late 19th century, people have asked how do we reflect the folk spirit of a nation through music? On this program, we hear three examples, each one reflecting the composer’s interests, priorities, passions, and a segment of their identity. From Bohemia to Alabama to contemporary America, here is a snapshot of the ways folk music inspired and continued to inspire new works in the classical tradition.
