Completed in 1893, Richard Strauss’s first-ever opera is such a rarity onstage that this performance marks the first in New York City this century. A riveting story of love, guilt, and renunciation, Guntram reveals a young Strauss positioning himself as a successor to Wagner. The work illustrates Strauss’ mastery of orchestral and vocal writing—combined here with the ethereal melodic arcs that anticipate his later, famous works.
