Tabea Zimmermann by Marco Borggreve, Javier Perianes by Marco Borggreve
Enjoy a rare viola recital in Zankel Hall by Tabea Zimmermann, one of the most in-demand musicians on her instrument and across chamber music as a whole. The program opens with Robert Schumann’s lyrical Fantasy Pieces, followed by Brahms’s beloved Viola Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 120, No. 2, which the composer adapted from his seminal Second Clarinet Sonata. Britten’s brooding Lachrymae—an homage to English Renaissance composer John Dowland—is featured in its original, rarely performed duo arrangement for viola and piano. The program concludes with Shostakovich’s final composition, his Viola Sonata, that culminates in a poignant farewell that quotes Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata.
