Workshop Information

Each season, emerging artists are given valuable access to world-class performers and composers who have established themselves on Carnegie Hall’s stages. In the 2022–2023 season, revered pianist Mitsuko Uchida—a Carnegie Hall Perspectives artist—will work with up-and-coming pianists in a special master class in 2023.

Application information will be available later in 2022.

Application Requirements

  • Biography (100–150 words)
  • Current Headshot
  • Audition Videos
    • Please upload one or two videos of personal performances demonstrating your own musical voice.
    • In a video of no more than two minutes, tell us how you want to improve your artistry and what you hope to get out of the workshop.
    • To introduce you to the nuances of conduction, we’d like you to watch this video and list the cues that you notice. (A cue is something performer says or does that signals for another performer to begin speaking, playing, etc.) There are 19 discernible cues in this conduction. Please list the 19 cues you see, and in three or four sentences describe what you believe transpired in this BSAC live performance.

Eligibility

The “Conduction” Workshop is open to emerging professional musicians ages 18–35 who are full-time US residents. Invited participants are expected to take part in all workshop activities at Carnegie Hall from March 31 to April 2, 2022.

Carnegie Hall is committed to having a fully vaccinated and boosted building, including within its concert venues, Resnick Education Wing, offices, and all other spaces on its premises. This policy will enable its programs to operate at full capacity while looking after everyone’s health and safety. Therefore, all applicants selected for the The “Conduction” Workshop will need to show proof of full vaccination including the booster against COVID-19 using a vaccine approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) in order to enter the building. We will be sending detailed guidelines once artists are accepted to the program. In the meantime, we are happy to answer any questions that you may have now about these new protocols.

Practical Information

There is no fee to apply. Invited participants are expected to arrive in New York City the day before the workshop begins and depart the day after it concludes. Shared hotel accommodations will be provided if needed. Carnegie Hall is able to defray the cost of round-trip travel to New York City for those beyond a 50-mile radius. For select itineraries, flights may be arranged by Carnegie Hall, or, if arranged by participants, eligible for reimbursement up to $600.00.

Carnegie Hall and Afrofuturism are committed to providing equitable access to learning opportunities.
