MAKE A JOYFUL NOIZE

Chapter One: We Got That

Lesson Three: For the Culture

Create a lyrical hook that expresses your artistic mission statement in music.

Your Assignment

  1. Watch the video in which Soul Science Lab demonstrates how to take the words from your brainstorm and turn them into a hook for your new song.
  2. Note how Chen plays with the words and stretches them into something that tells a story.
  3. Return to your brainstorm of all the words and phrases that define your personal culture.
  4. Play the recording of your rhythmic heartbeat from the previous lesson and start to put your brainstorm words together into a musical phrase. Remember to try telling a story with your hook.
  5. Record your hook into SoundTrap or another DAW.
  6. If you don’t have access to SoundTrap, you can still capture your idea. Record your hook using your phone. Use a computer or phone to play your track in the background and have a family member or friend record a video of you reciting the hook.
