IDNYC Frequently Asked Questions

What is IDNYC?

IDNYC is a free government-issued photo identification card for all New York City residents.

Who is eligible for IDNYC?

All New York City residents age 14 and older are able to get an IDNYC card. Applicants will be required to present proof of identity and residency in New York City.

What does an IDNYC card do?

The IDNYC card is an accessible and secure document that enables residents to access City services and grant admission to City buildings, such as schools. In addition, the card can be presented as proof of identification for interacting with the police.

You are also able to use your IDNYC card at any public library in New York. The card can be integrated with your account at the New York, Brooklyn, and Queens public libraries. This is the first time a single card will be accepted across all three systems.

A number of additional benefits are available to IDNYC cardholders, including the opportunity to sign up for free one-year memberships at 33 of the City's leading museums, zoos, concert halls, and botanical gardens. The City will continue to expand and improve upon the IDNYC program and work with businesses and community partners to make new benefits available to cardholders as the program grows.

How do I sign up for the IDNYC?

To sign up for an IDNYC card, you must complete an IDNYC application, available online at nyc.gov/idnyc or at any of the 12 IDNYC Enrollment Centers. You will need to bring your completed application, as well as proof for identity and residency to an Enrollment Center.

Once your IDNYC application is approved, your card will be mailed to your home in 10-14 business days. If you do not have an address or have security concerns about an address appearing on your IDNYC card, you will be able to pick up your card at the Enrollment Center where you applied 15 business days later.

How is Carnegie Hall involved with IDNYC?

Carnegie Hall offers a free one-year "Friends" membership (one membership per household) as a benefit to IDNYC cardholders 14 and over who are not a current member nor have been a member of or donor to Carnegie Hall within the past three years.

Included in this membership are:

  • Two complimentary tickets to Open Working Rehearsals.
  • Half-price ticket offers on select Carnegie Hall presentations.
  • Early access to the best seats available.
  • Keynotes monthly email membership guide.
  • Discounts at nearby restaurants, parking garages, shops, hotels, and more with your membership card.

All IDNYC Membership communications are delivered via email, including all benefit offers. Please make sure to include your email address in your application.

How do I sign up for Carnegie Hall IDNYC benefits?

First, you must apply for your IDNYC, as described above. Once you have received your IDNYC card, you can apply for your Carnegie Hall benefits.

What information is on the IDNYC card?

The card will feature your photograph, name, date of birth, signature, eye color, and height; the card’s expiration date; and unique ID number. You can choose whether or not to include your gender and emergency contact information, as well as if you would like to be an organ donor or prefer to speak a language other than English.

What are Open Working Rehearsals?

Open Working Rehearsals are rehearsals that an orchestra has agreed to open up to members of Carnegie Hall and their guests. They are a member-exclusive benefit that is included in your membership—we do not sell tickets to our rehearsals. You receive two passes to use during your membership year. Upcoming rehearsals are announced in our Keynotes monthly benefits email, usually sent on the first Thursday of every month. Passes can be reserved by calling CarnegieCharge at 212-247-7800. They will be mailed to you up to 10 days before the rehearsal date. After that, they will be held at the Box Office for pickup.
