Gustavo Dudamel by Rafael Pulido
Haydn’s dramatic “Fire” Symphony delights with its exuberant spirit and complements Prokofiev’s effervescent “Classical” Symphony. In this delightful work, Prokofiev cleverly emulates Classical-era scoring and tone while remaining firmly in the 20th century. His Symphony No. 5—written at the height of World War II—strikes a different chord, reflecting the tumultuous times in a grandly scaled and vibrantly orchestrated masterpiece.
