At a Glance

South African soprano Elza van den Heever has chosen an eclectic program that mixes Romantic lieder by Berg and Wagner in German and a fiery concert aria by Beethoven in Italian with delightful folk songs in her native Afrikaans by her compatriot Pieter de Villiers. Both the Berg and Wagner songs were fueled by their composers’ passionate love for a woman: Berg’s for his wife-to-be, Helene Nahowski, and Wagner’s for his Swiss benefactor’s wife, Mathilde Wesendonck, creator of the poems for his Wesendonck Lieder. Beethoven’s technically demanding scena “Ah! perfido” honored one of Mozart’s favorite singers, dramatic soprano Josepha Duschek. Leavening the fervid intensity of these works are de Villiers’s Seven Boerneef Songs, graphic musical portraits of life on a rural farm in the Transvaal.
