Continuing their popular series of Handel operas at Carnegie Hall, this year Harry Bicket and The English Concert bring us the well-loved Serse, which opens with the sublime aria “Ombra mai fù.” Strangely, this opera about the romantic entanglements of King Xerxes I of Persia—who in real life was a brutal would-be conqueror of Greece—was a relative failure at its first performances in London in 1738. Contemporary audiences were baffled by its unexpected mixture of tragedy and comedy, adopted from the style of Venetian operas of the 17th century. Today, this very mixture—as well as the quality of its beautiful and inventive score—delights audiences, making Serse one of Handel’s most frequently revived operas.
