At a Glance
This afternoon, Harry Bicket and The English Concert bring us perhaps the most impressive work of Handel’s last years, Solomon. A true oratorio rather than a quasi-opera, it reveals in four tableaux the achievements of Israel’s greatest king, the builder of the Temple at Jerusalem. To portray such a monumental biblical subject, Handel wrote for the largest chorus and orchestra he ever used, and the sonic splendor of Solomon’s music matches that of his Music for the Royal Fireworks, composed shortly thereafter. And rather than a single soloist, he made the chorus the star performer, unfurling a stunning series of pieces that display his supreme mastery of choral technique. Prepare to be blown out of your seats!
