At a Glance
In this program, Renée Fleming traces the art of the Romantic song in three languages—German, French, and Russian—over the course of the 19th century and into the 20th. The link between these very different cultural sensibilities was the thoroughly cosmopolitan Franz Liszt, who knew how to set both German and French with remarkable confidence and originality. From four of Franz Schubert’s songs composed in the 1820s, we travel via Liszt to Sergei Rachmaninoff and Henri Duparc, both writing at the turn of the 20th century. Since Ms. Fleming is partnering with one of the world’s greatest pianists, Evgeny Kissin, we also visit some of the short keyboard pieces by Liszt and Rachmaninoff, both of whom left rich legacies in this category.
