C. SCHUMANN Three Romances, Op. 22
Clara Schumann composed her Three Romances for the great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim. In their fanciful spontaneity of expression, they bear a marked family resemblance to her husband Robert’s beloved character pieces.
BRAHMS Scherzo from “FAE” Sonata
Another musical tribute to Joachim, this singular example of collaborative composition—of which Brahms’s Scherzo is the third movement—is built around the musical motif FAE, which had special significance for the members of Robert Schumann’s circle.
R. SCHUMANN Violin Sonata No. 3 in A Minor
The two movements that Schumann composed for the “FAE” Sonata form the core of this impassioned, valedictory work. Less frequently played than his first two sonatas, the A-Minor Sonata remained unpublished for a century after his death.
PROKOFIEV Five Melodies for Violin and Piano, Op. 35bis
Prokofiev’s lyrical gift is amply displayed in the shapely Five Melodies for Violin and Piano, written while the Russian composer was living in Europe and originally conceived as a set of wordless vocal exercises for mezzo-soprano Nina Koshetz.
PROKOFIEV Violin Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 94bis
Originally written for flute, the lighthearted and perennially popular Second Violin Sonata represents one of Prokofiev’s earnest attempts to mediate between his distinctively modernist style and the music for the masses that all Soviet artists were expected to produce under the banner of socialist realism.
