Belcea Quartet
Quatuor Ébène

Thursday, November 14, 2024 7:30 PM Zankel Hall
Belcea Quartet by Maurice Haas, Quatuor Ébène by Julien Mignot
Two of today’s finest string quartets become even more than the sum of their parts in octets by Felix Mendelssohn and George Enescu. These monumental works—each, incredibly, written by the prodigious composers in their teens—are quintessential representations of the form, showcasing the sonic power and rich, multilayered possibilities of an octet configuration. The Belcea Quartet’s most recent concert at Carnegie Hall was praised as “masterful ... superior artistry ... full of style, feeling, and expressive depth” (New York Classical Review), while Quatuor Ébène was called “as gorgeous as any ensemble in recent memory ... immaculately articulated exuberance” (The Strad).

At a Glance

FELIX MENDELSSOHN  String Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20

Mendelssohn was all of 16 when he wrote this breathtaking masterpiece in 1825. A few months earlier, Luigi Cherubini—the influential director of the Paris Conservatoire—had invited the young prodigy to study there under his supervision. Instead, Mendelssohn opted to continue his general studies at the university in Berlin, where he somehow found time to compose the Octet by mid-October.

ENESCU  String Octet in C Major, Op. 7

The Romanian composer-violinist George Enescu (or Georges Enesco, as he was known in France) wrote his popular Octet in 1900, a year after he graduated from the Paris Conservatoire. In plotting the work’s complex thematic structure, he likened himself to an “engineer casting his first suspension bridge across a river.”
