The Cleveland Orchestra

Please note that due to personal reasons, soprano Asmik Grigorian has regrettably cancelled her upcoming performances with The Cleveland Orchestra, including her scheduled appearance at Carnegie Hall.

Franz Welser-Möst by Julia Wesely
The most iconic four notes in music kick off this performance by Franz Welser-Möst and “America’s finest” (The New York Times) orchestra. Beethoven’s immortal Fifth Symphony is practically synonymous with its “fate knocking at the door” motif, but musical riches unfold from start to finish. An optimistic, three-note motif from its triumphant final movement is reborn in the Leonore Overture No. 3, written for Beethoven’s sole opera, Fidelio. Welser-Möst calls Fidelio “much more an idea than an opera,” and in Leonore No. 3, “the idea of freedom—not just politically, but in a big philosophical way for every individual—is put into 13 minutes of music.” Powerful thematic contrast comes in the form of a rarely performed suite of Janáček’s final opera, From the House of the Dead.

In the Conductor’s Own Words

This program gives us a chance to say something important about our world today. As people fight for freedom everywhere, these pieces tell that same human story. Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony shows us the journey from darkness to light. Janáček’s From the House of the Dead reveals how human dignity survives even in the most desolate of circumstances. And the Leonore Overture is, to me, simply the greatest music about freedom ever written. These works together create a profound statement that I believe will resonate deeply with our audience in New York.
