GRIEG Piano Sonata in E Minor, Op. 7
Written in his early 20s, Grieg’s first and only Piano Sonata reflects the young composer’s solidly Germanic training, with a foretaste of the Norwegian folk influence that would become an integral feature of his mature musical style. The sonata’s Nordic-flavored themes anticipate Grieg’s emergence as a full-fledged musical nationalist.
TVEITT Piano Sonata No. 29, Op. 129, “Sonata etere”
Norwegian composer Geirr Tveitt followed in Grieg’s footsteps as a musical nationalist: He is best known for his many settings of folk tunes from Norway’s Hardanger region for both piano and orchestra. A distinguished concert pianist, he gave the premiere of his visionary “Ether” Sonata in Paris in 1947.
CHOPIN Twenty-Four Preludes, Op. 28
In an age replete with keyboard virtuosos, Chopin’s combination of bravura technique and poetic feeling defined a new school of Romantic pianism. Patterned after J. S. Bach’s keyboard preludes in all 24 major and minor keys, Chopin’s Op. 28 Preludes pack a weighty musical and emotional punch despite their extreme brevity. Franz Liszt, whose own tone poems were strongly influenced by Chopin, characterized them as “poetic preludes, analogous to those of a great contemporary poet, who cradles the soul in golden dreams, and elevates it to the regions of the ideal.”
