Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto (concert performance)
Sunday, May 4, 2025 2 PM Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
Harry Bicket by Dario Acosta, Christophe Dumaux by Edouard Brane, Louise Alder by Will Alder
An annual highlight at Carnegie Hall is the “luxurious Sunday afternoon featuring the period-instrument ensemble The English Concert, its artistic director and conductor Harry Bicket, and an impeccably cast and performed Handel opera,” wrote The Wall Street Journal after the ensemble’s 2023–2024 concert. This season, The English Concert turns its attention to Giulio Cesare in Egitto, one of Handel’s most popular Baroque operas. With exquisite ensemble work, charismatic singers, and a playful penchant for the theatrical, this concert performance brings to life the ancient dramas of Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, and more.

At a Glance

Harry Bicket and The English Concert return to Carnegie to continue their lauded series of Handel’s operas and oratorios, this time bringing the most popular of them all—Giulio Cesare in Egitto. The first of the “Miracle Year” trilogy of operas of 1724–1725, it was the most ambitious opera he’d yet attempted: longer, with the largest and most variegated orchestra, and a cast of the greatest singers of the age singing one show-stopping piece after another. Based very loosely on history, it told a story of epic sweep about two of the most famous personalities of ancient Rome and Egypt. Not surprisingly, London audiences fell in love with it and demanded its return for many more performances in the following season.
