At a Glance

In this program, Matthias Goerne and Evgeny Kissin link the vocal music of Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, whose lives were closely intertwined. When the 20-year-old Brahms appeared on Schumann’s doorstep in 1853, he astounded the older man with his precocious musical mastery. Also enchanted was his wife, Clara Schumann. And it is Clara—the alluring, unavailable woman—who forms the inspiration for most of the music we will hear tonight. R. Schumann’s great song cycle Dichterliebe was composed during the final months before he finally won her hand in marriage. Brahms loved her his entire life, but never married her after Robert’s untimely death. It is his unfulfilled relationship with her that haunts many of the songs we will hear, especially those of his Opus 32. There is also another focus in this program: the poetry of Heinrich Heine, who was a particular favorite of R. Schumann and inspired many of Brahms’s songs.
