At a Glance

Samantha Hankey has assembled an intriguing program of Austro-German and French songs composed at the turn of the 20th century between 1899 and 1913. This was a creative period on the verge of a revolution as the over-ripeness of the late-Romantic style evolved into the austerity of 12-tone music. And not only music changed—so did poetry, which became much franker than what was previously acceptable. The seven composers featured, especially the five from Germany and Austria—Berg, A. Mahler, Schoenberg, R. Strauss, and Zemlinsky—all knew each other well and strongly influenced each other’s creations. Listening to and comparing these songs provides a deep dive into one of music’s most fascinating periods.
